Biden nominates critic of facial recognition to FTC post

U.S. President Joe Biden has nominated privacy advocate Alvaro Bedoya to the Democratic slot as commissioner at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The matter, говорится on the White House website.

Bedoya, a professor at Georgetown University Law Center, specializes in privacy law. His research focuses on how technologies such as facial recognition lead to discrimination against immigrants and national minorities.

Previously Bedoya was the chief counsel to the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law, where he helped organise oversight hearings on mobile-location tracking and biometrics. He is also regarded as a technical expert on privacy issues at the largest online platforms.

The FTC monitors privacy, data security and compliance with antitrust laws. Recently the agency has developed an aggressive enforcement program that could unleash a wave of investigations, lawsuits and regulatory actions.

FTC Chair Lina Khan поддержала Bedoya’s nomination:

“Bedoya’s experience in surveillance and data protection, as well as his long-standing commitment to public service, will be extremely valuable to the Commission as we work to meet this moment of substantial needs and opportunities.”

Confirmation of Bedoya’s nomination requires Senate approval.

Earlier in September, the U.S. government formed an AI committee to advise the president and federal agencies.

In June, the White House created an artificial intelligence working group.

In April, the FTC urged companies to take a close look at the use of sexist and racist algorithms.
