Binance hires former Europol darknet expert

Former Europol darknet specialist Nils Andersen-Röed (Nils Andersen-Röed) has joined Binance’s security team, according to the exchange’s statement.

Before joining Europol, Andersen-Röed worked for the Dutch national police and specialised in the darknet. In particular, he coordinated the takedowns of the Hansa Market and AlphaBay marketplaces with colleagues around the world.

According to the statement, the new hire will focus on conducting internal and external investigations to identify criminals on Binance’s platforms. His duties also include protecting users’ funds and “active support for law enforcement”.

In recent months, financial regulators from several countries, including the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa and a number of others, issued warnings to investors regarding the exchange’s activities.

Against this backdrop, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao published an open letter, in which he outlined the exchange’s plans for regulatory compliance and customer protection.

In August, Binance introduced mandatory verification of users and invited former US Treasury investigator Greg Monahan to the position of anti-money-laundering officer.

In September, Zhao said that Binance would abandon its “decentralised” model and transform into a licensed entity with a centralized business.
