On Wednesday, 26 August, a letter threatening an explosion was received by the Government of Saratov Oblast. The attackers demanded 1.990364 BTC, according to the local publication \”Fourth Power\”.
Law enforcement and security services who arrived at the Saratov government building found no signs of a bombing.
Earlier, a series of false bomb threats across Russia began in 2019. An unknown person demanded payment of 120 BTC, allegedly stolen from the Bitcoin exchange WEX by entrepreneur Konstantin Malofeyev.
To combat the activity of the “miner,” Roskomnadzor has already blocked several mail services that he used to send letters. Among them StartMail, ProtonMail, Anonymousspeech and Vistomail.
It is not known whether the Saratov incident is connected with the WEX Bitcoin extortionist.
