
Bitfinex offers up to $400m for return of 2016 stolen BTC
The cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex has announced a reward for assistance in recovering funds stolen from the platform in 2016 as a result of a hack.

The exchange said it is prepared to allocate 5% of the stolen amount to anyone who can help connect with those involved in the breach. Moreover, Bitfinex is prepared to give the hackers themselves 25% of the recovered funds.
The Bitfinex hack occurred on August 2, 2016. In total, the attackers stole 119,756 BTC ($71.8 million at the rate at the time).
According to the exchange’s assessment, after deducting the funds it is prepared to pay as a reward, the current amount stands at $1.344 billion. 30% of the reward is valued at just over $403 million.
As noted, transfers of Bitfinex-stolen bitcoins from tagged wallets have intensified: over the past week alone the total amount moved exceeded 4,571 BTC (~$51.5 million).
