Bitfury signs deal to build mining centre in Ukraine
A subsidiary of Bitfury Holding BV, a leading provider of technology solutions, and state-owned Energoatom signed a memorandum to build data centers on the sites of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants.
The memorandum’s main aim is to increase electricity production and its subsequent balanced consumption.
“Data centers on the sites of NPPs will help address one of the sector’s most acute problems—the restriction of electricity output from nuclear plants,” – отметил Energoatom head Petr Kotin.
The agreement provides for the creation of data centers whose total energy consumption could reach 2 GW.
No timelines for construction or investment volumes are disclosed.
ForkLog has requested comment from Bitfury Group representatives.
Earlier in May, Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy tasked Energoatom with studying the possibility of cryptocurrency mining at the country’s nuclear power plants.
Later in the ministry, this was explained that mining would maintain guaranteed loads at the NPPs and attract additional funds.
In the summer of 2020, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine proposed to reduce electricity costs for mining centers with a capacity of over 100 MW.
