Boston Dynamics sues Ghost Robotics, maker of ‘killer-robots’, over seven patents

Boston Dynamics has filed suit against Ghost Robotics for alleged infringement of seven patents related to quadruped robots. According to The Robot Report.

According to the Hyundai-owned developer, the rival Spirit 40 and Vision 60 devices allegedly borrow key Spot technologies, including autonomous control systems, legged screw-drive propulsion.

Boston Dynamics said that in July 2020, five months after Spirit 40’s launch, it contacted Ghost Robotics asking them to review the patents and confirm that there were no infringements. Later, the company sent two letters to the competitor urging it to cease infringing actions and stop selling the robodogs.

According to the complaint, Ghost Robotics is well aware of its actions.

“The defendant intentionally continues to infringe Boston Dynamics’ rights in a senseless, willful and egregious manner, with reckless disregard for Boston Dynamics’ patents,” says the complaint.

According to the plaintiff, the company ‘welcomes competition’, but will take hard measures against manufacturers infringing its intellectual property.

As part of the suit, Boston Dynamics seeks unspecified damages.

In October, a coalition of six robotics companies refused to create or support the use of devices and software developed by them for military purposes.

In August, it became known that the United States Space Force is deploying Ghost Robotics’ robodogs for patrolling and automating certain security tasks.

In October 2021, researchers at Bristol University began training Boston Dynamics’ Spot to interact with radioactive waste.
