Brian Brooks to lead Binance US unit

Brian Brooks, former head of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) within the U.S. Treasury, will take the post of head of Binance’s U.S. unit. This was reported by Wall Street Journal.

According to the report, on May 1 Brooks will replace the current Binance US CEO Katherine Koli. Whether she remains in another role or leaves the company is not specified.

Update:

During a conversation with CoinDesk Brooks expressed the view that the American branch is very likely to compete with Coinbase. He hopes that Binance US will fully comply with regulatory requirements and offer a wide range of products.

Brooks previously held a leadership position at Coinbase. In the summer of 2020, Donald Trump appointed him head of the OCC.

Under Brooks to hold the collateral backing stablecoins and keys to cryptocurrency wallets on behalf of clients. The OCC also provided financial institutions with the ability to use public blockchains and stablecoins for settlements.

In November 2020, six members of the U.S. Congress criticised the OCC’s work. In their view, the agency paid too much attention to cryptocurrencies.

On January 14, 2021, Brooks resigned from the post of head of the OCC. Later he became an independent member of the board of directors of the Spring Labs startup, which develops data-protection solutions.

Earlier, in February, Brian Brooks described Tesla’s investment in Bitcoin as both astonishing and troubling news.
