Budapest to install statue in honour of Satoshi Nakamoto

Hungary will become the first country in the world to install a statue of the mysterious Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto, according to Hungary Today.

The bronze busts, life-size, by sculptors Réka Gergely and Tamás Gilli will depict a hooded figure with the symbol of the first cryptocurrency on its chest.

Because Nakamoto’s identity remains unknown, the statue’s mirrored surface will reflect visitors’ own image. The authors say this embodies the Bitcoin community’s popular idea that “we are all Satoshi”.

The community continues to speculate about who hides behind the Nakamoto pseudonym, and one of the most likely candidates is American cryptographer of Hungarian origin Nick Szabo.

The initiative for the statue project was launched by crypto-enthusiast András Dorfi. In his view, Nakamoto’s identity does not matter — the main point is that he “opened a new chapter in Internet history,” when his invention led to the emergence of new digital currencies. But what will transform the world most, Dorfi emphasised, is the blockchain technology underlying Bitcoin.

“This is an efficient, fair and transparent database that eliminates distrust between people and could make the world better in many areas, from food supply to aid delivery,” he said.

The project is funded by four organisations: Mr. Coin, Crypto Academy, the Blockchain Hungary Association and Blockchain Budapest.

The statue will be installed in the Graphisoft Industrial Park in Budapest.

Earlier, in September 2018, a virtual monument to the creator of Bitcoin appeared in Kyiv.

In January 2021, a Tomsk resident appealed to the mayor’s office with a proposal to install a monument “The Lost Bitcoin”.
