Speaking at the event, Buterin discussed the upcoming ‘The Merge’, during which the blockchain will switch to the Proof-of-Stake consensus algorithm Proof-of-Stake (PoS), and outlined the long-term prospects for its development.

Further updates anticipate the implementation of sharding and the expanded use of Rollups, which will raise the network’s throughput.

“By the end of this roadmap, Ethereum will become a much more scalable system and will be able to process 100,000 TPS,” said Buterin.

Among the most significant forthcoming changes, he cited:

According to Buterin, achieving these goals is hindered by the network’s complexity and how rapidly it evolves.

In July, Ethereum developers had tentatively slated the implementation of The Merge for September 19, 2022.

In May, team representatives predicted that the upgrade would take place in August. Buterin also said that month was the most likely time for the transition, but warned of a possible shift to September-October if potential risks emerged.
