Buterin urges developers to focus on layer-two solutions

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin does not expect a quick solution to the scalability problem of the Ethereum mainnet, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation. He outlined his position on this issue in a roadmap focused on Rollup technology.

In his view, there are still years to go before Ethereum achieves base-layer scalability. Therefore, Buterin is currently advocating focusing on layer-two solutions that reduce network load and increase transaction speed.

Vitalik Buterin estimated Ethereum’s current throughput at around 15 TPS. With Rollups fully implemented and ETH 2.0 in place, the network could theoretically process 100,000 TPS.

The Ethereum co-founder believes that layer-two protocols should be embedded in wallets, and not in web pages like dapps. He noted that such an integration would require the user to place full trust, which reduces security.

‘Ideally, we want to make the second layer part of the wallet itself (for example, MetaMask), to preserve the current trust model,’ wrote Buterin.

Developer Hudson Jameson expressed concern that with the implementation of a second-layer solution, the ‘simplicity of the blockchain’ would disappear. In response, Buterin said there is no alternative in the near term.

‘There is no path to bypass layer-two solutions that would lead to scalability in the near and medium term,’ he stressed.

Earlier this September, Ethereum developer Evan Van Ness said, that the launch of ETH 2.0 could occur earlier than scheduled if there are no serious issues with the final stage of testing.

On 29 September, Ethereum developers launched the Spadina testnet. ‘The rehearsal’ of the zero phase launch failed due to bugs, so they decided to launch the Zinken testnet.
