California lawmakers propose paying for government services with cryptocurrency
Democratic Senator Sidney Kamlager introduced a bill that would allow California residents to use cryptocurrency to pay for government services.
According to the text, the measure would permit state agencies to accept digital assets as a form of payment. The bill was introduced on February 18 as part of the 2022 legislative session package.
In February, Colorado Governor Jared Polis said that by the summer the state would implement the ability to pay taxes and fees in cryptocurrencies. He said the move was intended to provide convenience for residents and to speed up payments.
Earlier similar initiatives did not gain legislative support in Arizona and Illinois. Ohio approved tax payments in bitcoin, but later stopped accepting cryptocurrency payments due to weak demand for the service.
In May 2021, authorities in Williston, North Dakota, allowed the payment of utilities in bitcoin.
