Coinbase denies unpublished New York Times article on racial discrimination by employees
The cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase опубликовала an internal letter regarding a forthcoming article in The New York Times (NYT). Its main topic is allegedly the ‘negative experience’ that several Black employees reportedly had while working at the company.
The letter states that NYT journalist Nathaniel Popper is reportedly set to mention three former Coinbase employees and a contractor — they left the company in late Q2 2019.
“The story also relies on information from other current and former employees, including leaks of content from Slack, internal company meetings, and documents,” a Coinbase spokesperson said.
“In fact, only three of these people filed complaints during their time at Coinbase,” the letter states.
The company says that the claims were ‘thoroughly investigated’, but no evidence of wrongdoing was found. Coinbase sent several letters to the NYT in an attempt to clarify the situation, but doubted that the publication would use them in the piece.
For Coinbase, this article could be yet another blow to its image. At the end of September, the trading platform declined to discuss political questions unrelated to the cryptocurrency industry. In response to the changes, Coinbase proposed to resign. As a result, Coinbase lost about 5% of its staff.
On October 14, Jeff Horowitz left the post of Director of Regulatory Compliance Oversight, however, the company did not disclose the reasons for the decision.
A few days later, John Rass left Coinbase’s head of international marketing over an ‘apolitical mission’.
