Collector pays $335,000 for Banksy NFT; authenticity of the work questioned

An NFT collector, Pranksy, purchased a work allegedly attributed to the anonymous artist Banksy. He paid 100 ETH (about $335,000 at the rate prevailing at the time of the deal). A few hours later, he received a duplicate token.

An NFT titled Great Redistribution of the Climate Change Disaster was issued by a user of the OpenSea marketplace gaakmann. Bryan S Gaakman — one of Banksy’s pseudonyms (an anagram of banksy), which he first used использовал at a Royal Academy of Arts exhibition in the United Kingdom in 2018.

Some users immediately doubted the authenticity of the NFT, since Banksy did not post information about the work on his Instagram account. However the image briefly appeared on the site listed in the header of the artist’s profile.

After the sale the image was removed — the corresponding link now directs to the homepage of the portal. Pranksy suggested that a “site takeover” had occurred. In Pranksy’s OpenSea profile there are two tokens — the “original” and the duplicate.

«Although I may be mistaken after all. It no longer shows up for me. This is all very confusing, one could say… Banksy-esque?! I am at a loss, because the scammer sent a counterfeit NFT to my address. The second token was on that address», — написал Pranksy.

The duplicate NFT was issued by a user with a modified nickname gaokmann — the original token author’s profile bears the name gaakmann.

The Block analyst Larry Cermak noted that the address involved in issuing the original NFT is linked to many suspicious transactions. Funds were sent from a Binance account that did not pass KYC. The address also interacted with the Tornado mixer and the Dice2Win gaming platform.

Earlier in March, NFT featuring a copy of Banksy’s Morons went to auction for 228.69 ETH.
