Controversial Clearview AI facial-recognition tool raises $30 million in Series B

The developer of the Clearview AI facial-recognition tool raised $30 million in a Series B round. The New York Times reports.

The investors in Clearview AI were not disclosed. According to the company’s chief executive Hoan Ton-That, they include “institutional and private family offices”.

Founded in 2017, the company has so far raised more than $38 million at a valuation of $130 million.

Earlier in May, a group of European privacy and digital rights filed legal complaints against Clearview AI.

In April, U.S. Senator Ron Wyden introduced the bill “Fourth Amendment Is Not for Sale,” which would prohibit government agencies from purchasing biometric data without a court order.

In February, Canadian privacy regulators said that Clearview AI’s activities violate local laws, collecting citizens’ photographs from the internet without their consent.
