Cumulus Data has completed work on a Bitcoin mining data centre connected to the Susquehanna nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania (United States). The report is from CNET.
The firm describes the facility as the first cryptocurrency mining operation in the United States powered entirely by nuclear energy with a net-zero carbon footprint.
However, a number of industry players already use the nuclear power plant as a power source, for example CleanSpark. According to the publication, the Oklo startup plans to build a small nuclear power plant for such purposes. The firm signed a 20-year agreement with mining company Compass Mining.
The first client at the 48 MW facility will be TeraWulf. The company expects that Bitcoin miners will be deployed this year.
Earlier, the firm announced plans to build another 18 data centres to mine the first cryptocurrency using nuclear energy from the power stations of its parent company, Talen Energy.
As reported in an exclusive piece, ForkLog explained how the mining industry weathered 2022 amid the bear Bitcoin market.
