Dfinity quietly launches the Internet Computer mainnet.

Last month, the blockchain project Dfinity carried out the ‘decisive initial stage of decentralisation’ of its ‘Internet Computer’, launching its mainnet.

On December 18, 2020, the decentralization of the Internet Computer’s public network (aka mainnet) was initialized, as per the Mercury milestone. This means that the #InternetComputer’s mainnet now exists. https://t.co/IkdfiX1Ivk pic.twitter.com/eOngM8RnyA

\nDevelopers noted that the Internet Computer is a blockchain that operates at network speeds and can scale its throughput without being tied to the volume of smart-contract computations or the amount of stored data. NNS is an open governance system that controls the network.

On December 18, 2020, Mercury was released, as a result of which the blockchain is now hosted on standardized ‘node machines’ under the control of the NNS.

As soon as the mainnet came online, having completed the initial cryptographic setup procedures, the NNS took on responsibility for organising the network’s ongoing management tasks, such as launching new node machines to increase the network’s computing power and updating node machines to upgrade the network protocol, the statement said.

The final stage of decentralising the network will be the Genesis release, scheduled for the first quarter of 2021. After that, the NNS will begin issuing ICP utility tokens. With them, users will be able to generate ‘neurons’ and participate in network governance by voting on new proposals.

As reported, the Dfinity team launched NNS in October last year.
