Duma proposes Irkutsk Region as pilot for moving miners out of the ‘grey zone’

The Irkutsk Region could become the pilot region for moving miners out of the ‘grey zone’. The proposal was put forward by Russian State Duma deputy Anton Gorelkin in his Telegram channel.

He noted that he agrees with the Central Bank that it is dangerous to grant cryptocurrencies the status of legal tender.

“But since mining has, in fact, become a daily source of income for many Russians, perhaps it is time to move people out of the ‘grey zone’? The Irkutsk Region could be the pilot region in this story — since the status as the capital of Russian mining has ended up there,” Gorelkin said.

In October, Irkutsk Region governor Igor Kobzev complained to the government about the increased electricity consumption due to miners. Later, entrepreneurs in the Irkutsk Region proposed special tariffs on electricity for miners.

Earlier in November, representatives of several Russian ministries supported the initiative to recognize mining as a form of entrepreneurial activity.

The LDPR faction announced the preparation of a bill to regulate cryptocurrency mining. The State Duma also intends to create an inter-committee working group to discuss mining.
