El Salvador begins Bitcoin mining on volcano-powered energy.

El Salvador has begun mining the first cryptocurrency using geothermal energy from volcanoes. President Nayib Bukele announced this on Twitter.

«Мы все еще тестируем и устанавливаем [оборудование], но это официально первая добыча биткоина из вулкана», — написал он.

According to the posted payout results, 0.0059 BTC was mined (about $265.50 at the exchange rate at the time of writing).

One user noted that most pools report on a three-hour basis, and left an ironic comment under the figures:

“Not bad for home mining”

They were reminded that this is a test.

29 September, the head of state posted a video that demonstrated the arrival and deployment of ASIC miners at one of the facilities of the state-owned energy company LaGeo.

Bukele proposed to organise mining on the environmentally clean geothermal energy of the country’s volcanoes on June 10 — the day after Parliament passed the bill recognizing Bitcoin as an official means of payment.

Law took effect on September 7.

On September 27, the president said that the state crypto wallet Chivo is actively used by 2.1 million residents of the country. In a tweet on October 1, he said that this figure had reached 2.73 million.

“180 new users (not downloads) every minute. Remittances of a million dollars daily,” he added.

Earlier the president acknowledged that the Chivo rollout had run into technical difficulties and promised to overcome them in the coming days.

In a comment under Bukele’s post about the start of mining, a local resident заявила that she has not been able to resolve the problem registering in the app.

The government credits $30 in Bitcoin to each new Chivo user. The funds come from a specially created fund of $150 million.
