El Salvador’s president says bitcoin wallet use is voluntary

The Chivo Bitcoin wallet is compatible with other similar apps and will not become mandatory for use in El Salvador, according to President Nayib Bukele.

According to Bukele, Chivo is one of many cryptocurrency wallets that residents may use. He added that the personal information requested by the app is already in the possession of the government.

\n\n\n\n

«The purpose of transmitting data for [wallet registration] is to prevent theft or loss of the money contained in it,» the president wrote.

\n\n\n\n

Bukele also ruled out fees on transfers and conversions in Chivo. Users will be able to cash out funds at any of the 200 Bitcoin ATMs or offline branches.

\n\n\n\n

5. El dinero que se tenga o se reciba (en dólares o en bitcoin) en la @chivowallet podrá ser retirado en efectivo (en dólares) en el momento que se desee.

Se podrá hacer en las sucursales físicas que se abrirán de Chivo y en los Cajeros Chivo.

Esto NO tendrá comisión.

Earlier, Bukele announceda $30 airdrop in the first cryptocurrency to every adult resident of El Salvador. He said this amount cannot be converted into dollars, because the aim is to encourage the use of digital gold and Chivo.

8. Los únicos #bitcoin que no pueden ser convertidos son los $30 dólares en bitcoin que dará el Gobierno.

Esos solo podrán ser gastados.

¿Por qué?

Porque el propósito de esos $30 en #bitcoin no es regalar dinero, sino incentivar el uso de bitcoin y de la @chivowallet.

The bill recognizing Bitcoin as legal tender, the Salvadoran parliament passed in early June. The measure will take effect on September 7, 2021.

The opposition called unconstitutional the legalization of digital gold.

\n\n\n\n

The initiative also did not find traction among local remittance services — only some have integrated Bitcoin support.

Earlier, the American operator of cryptocurrency ATMs Athena Bitcoinwill install 1500 Bitcoin ATMs in El Salvador.
