The billionaire made this announcement following a lawsuit against OpenAI. He accused the company of abandoning its original values of openness and working for the benefit of humanity in favor of a commercial model.
Musk has repeatedly spoken out against the use of AI for profit by large tech companies.
The entrepreneur’s move will allow anyone interested to experiment with the code underlying Grok. This will enable the integration of xAI’s achievements with the successes of other corporations with similar policies, such as Meta and Mistral.
Some experts believe that open-source AI models could be used by malicious actors to create chemical weapons or develop superintelligence beyond human control. However, they acknowledge that this approach could also accelerate innovation.
In 2023, Musk expressed a desire to create a “third-party referee” to monitor AI companies.
In December, the startup released the Grok chatbot for Premium+ subscribers on X.
In February 2024, Google also released the AI model Gemma, which third-party developers can modify to suit their needs.
