Elon Musk Renews Legal Battle Against OpenAI

Billionaire Elon Musk has reignited his legal proceedings against OpenAI, as reported by the New York Times

The lawsuit alleges that the AI startup and its two founders, Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, breached the company’s founding agreement by prioritising commercial interests over the public good.

A similar claim was made in a previous document, which Musk withdrew in mid-June without explanation.

The statement asserts that Altman and Brockman joined forces with Musk to establish OpenAI in 2015 to advance artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity. However, they allegedly abandoned this mission by entering into a multi-billion dollar partnership with Microsoft.

In response to the initial filing, the company’s CEO and other staff declared their commitment to serving the public good through the creation of general artificial intelligence.

Musk believes that Altman and Brockman broke their promise to freely distribute and open-source the technologies, granting Microsoft an exclusive license instead.

Earlier, media reports highlighted potential financial issues at OpenAI.

In June, it emerged that the company was considering restructuring into a commercial business.

In the same month, OpenAI reported a doubling of its revenue.

In May, Musk identified artificial intelligence as his primary concern.
