According to the entrepreneur, the reasons for punishment definitely existed, but the sentence seems excessive.
The Silk Road story: how Bitcoin elevated the darknet economy to a new level
In 2015, the court found Ulbricht guilty of trafficking in drugs through the Silk Road darknet marketplace, conspiring to traffic in prohibited substances, hacking computer networks and money laundering, and leading a criminal organization.
In the same year, the founder of the darknet marketplace was sentenced to life imprisonment.
In 2019, venture capitalist Tim Draper spoke out in favor of Ulbricht’s release. In March 2020, a petition with a similar demand gathered 275,000 signatures.
According to media reports, in December Donald Trump instructed the president’s aides to examine the documents in Ulbricht’s case. However the Silk Road founder was not among those pardoned by the former US president.
