Ethereum team migrates Ropsten testnet to Proof-of-Stake consensus

The Ethereum development team will migrate the Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus algorithm. According to the project’s assessment, less than half an hour remains until the testnet’s merger with the Beacon Chain.

The migration process of Ropsten to PoS has completed, according to Ethereum lead developer Tim Beiko. The first transactions have already been included in the updated test network.

\n\n

We do have some missing block proposals, which was a known issue before. Now, client teams will dig into the specifics across each combo 👀 expect a proper update by AllCoreDevs this Friday!

Beiko noted that after the merger, the team identified issues with validators proposing new blocks. He said that developers are examining each incident and will report results on Friday.

Some users have also reported node desynchronization on the Nethermind client.

As anticipated, the Merge would occur in several stages. On May 30, developers deployed the blockchain’s consensus layer — the Beacon Chain.

Ropsten beacon chain genesis was a success! 🎉

On June 2, in slot #24,000, the team activated the Bellatrix upgrade, designed to prepare the Beacon Chain for the Merge with Ropsten. Developers set the Terminal Total Difficulty (TTD) parameter at 50×1015.

\n\n\n

TTD is the network’s cumulative difficulty up to the requested block. The parameter is typically used to prevent unwanted forks — the client is configured to support the fork with the higher value.

\n\n\n

As of writing, the TTD on Ropsten stands above 49×1015. The time required to reach the threshold directly depends on the network’s hash rate.

It is expected that after the network reaches this milestone, the Merge will begin. The next block can only be mined by a Beacon Chain validator. The migration is considered complete after this block.

\n\n\n

After the completion of the process, the PoS transition will be extended to the Goerli and Sepolia test nets as well. This will take several weeks.

\n\n\n

Once the execution layer has exceeded the `TTD`, the next block will be solely produced by a Beacon Chain validator.

The Merge is considered complete once this block is finalizes.

After Ropsten, other testnets (Goerli & Sepolia) will also transition to PoS in the coming weeks.

In May 2022, one of the leading Ethereum developers, Preston Van Loon, stated that the Ethereum transition to PoS would take place in August.
