Experts estimate SSD wear from mining the Chia cryptocurrency

Mining the Chia cryptocurrency shortens the lifespan of a 512GB SSD from five years to two months, according to MyDrivers.

During 40–50 days of mining, a 512GB SSD would rewrite 256TB of data, whereas the typical daily write volume for such disks is no more than 20GB.

A 1TB SSD wears out in under three months, and 2TB drives in six months.

Because SSD manufacturers do not guarantee drives that have exhausted their usable life, experts expect most will end up on the secondary market. Even at a lower price, the speed and endurance of such SSDs will be significantly limited.

As of writing, the total disk space occupied by the Chia cryptocurrency превышает 3,1 эксабайта. Цена XCH – $1073.

The Chia Network, created by Bram Cohen, uses the Proof-of-Space and Proof-of-Time [proofs of space and time].

On the wave of hype around the coin, miners created a local shortage of HDDs and SSDs in China.

The local solid-state drive maker Galax warned users that it would refuse warranty service for SSDs used for mining Chia.

Earlier, the Amazon Web Services cloud computing platform offered to use its system for mining Chia, but deleted the information from the site on the same day.
