Experts reveal how much money hackers stole from cryptocurrency users over nine years

Over the past nine years, from 2011 to 2020, cryptocurrency users lost assets totaling $7.6 billion as a result of 113 attacks and 23 fraudulent schemes. This is comparable to Monaco’s GDP, according to Crystal Blockchain’s analytics service.

In the report, Crystal Blockchain’s analysts examined all hacks, vulnerabilities, and fraudulent schemes in the industry. The most frequently targeted were exchanges in the United States, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan, and China. The largest incident by scale was the 2018 hack of the Japanese trading platform Coincheck.

The authors of the report believe that the number of cyberattacks in the coming years will only grow.

In May, Crystal Blockchain recorded a rise in the popularity of Bitcoin mixers among darknet users. In the first quarter of 2020, the share of Bitcoins sent through darknet services to mixers rose by 20%.
