Figure Unveils Second Generation Humanoid Robot

Figure has unveiled the next generation of its humanoid robot — the Figure 02.

The second version features “completely redesigned hardware and software,” with advancements in AI, computer vision, batteries, electronics, sensors, and actuators, according to the company.

The robot is equipped with:

  • speakers and microphones to converse with and listen to humans;
  • AI-based vision system with six built-in RGB cameras;
  • fourth-generation arms with 16 degrees of freedom and human-equivalent strength;
  • a battery pack enhanced by 50%;
  • central and graphics processors improved threefold.

Figure 02 visited the BMW plant in Spartanburg for training and data collection. In January, the companies signed a commercial agreement, and in June, the robot developer demonstrated its efficiency at the automaker’s facility.

In February, the startup secured $675 million with a valuation of $2 billion from OpenAI, Microsoft, Jeff Bezos, Nvidia, Intel, and other investors.

In March, the company showcased the first result of its collaboration with OpenAI — the bot learned to communicate in real-time using ChatGPT.

Figure’s competitor, Tesla, introduced a humanoid robot in 2021. In December 2023, the company unveiled the Optimus Gen 1 model, capable of walking forward, calibrating body parts, moving them across 11 axes, and assuming various poses.

In June, Elon Musk stated that Optimus would elevate Tesla’s market capitalization to $25 trillion, with limited production of humanoid robots set to commence in 2025.
