The idea behind the project is to give owners of computer hardware the ability to earn the native cryptocurrency Filecoin (FIL) by using excess capacity of their hard drives for decentralized data storage.

The launch was initially planned for mid-2019; in September that year it was moved to the first–second quarters of 2020. In April this year, the developers again took this step, outlining three possible scenarios with date windows from July 6 to September 4. Because the final phase of the testnet was moved to August 3, these timelines could not be met.

More than 400 miners from 34 countries joined the testnet, and total storage capacity exceeded 325 pebibyte (PiB). This would be enough to store 90 million 1080p movies and 1,400 copies of all of Wikipedia.

Over the coming weeks, a phase of preparation for the mainnet launch will take place. During this period, miners, clients, custodial services and Filecoin application developers will have the opportunity to initialise, train, configure, and optimise their systems. As of writing, the project’s testnet hosts more than 265 different applications.
During the 2017 ICO the project raised $257 million. Participation was possible only for accredited investment firms, banks and wealthy private individuals, in full compliance with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission rules.
In August, became known of a conflict between Protocol Labs and investors who provided funding prior to the token sale.
