First version of Wikipedia put up for auction at Christie’s as an NFT

Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales выставил for sale the first version of the online encyclopedia at Christie’s auction as a non-fungible token (NFT).

Auction will run until December 15. Along with the Wikipedia homepage token from January 15, 2001, for sale выставили an iMac computer, from which Wales first launched the encyclopedia.

The proceeds from the sale will go to charity and the project’s own social network WT.Social.

As of this writing, bids stood at $2,400 for the Wikipedia token and $600 for the iMac.

After the sale, the Wikipedia homepage will be placed online. Five minutes after it is edited, it will revert to its original state. The owner will be able to lock access to the page or prohibit editing.

Earlier in June 2021, Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the World Wide Web, sold the original source code that underpins the Internet as an NFT. An error was found in it.
