Former Bank of England governor joins Stripe board
Mark Carney, who led the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England from 2008 to 2020, has become a member of Stripe’s board of directors.
We’re delighted to add Mark Carney to Stripe’s board: https://t.co/ad8xpUaYo0.
Mark has served as Governor of both the Bank of England *and* Bank of Canada. He’s also the current UN Special Envoy for Climate Action.
We’re looking forward to building the Stripe of 2030 with him.

As governor of the Bank of England, Carney initiated consideration of launching a national digital currency. Earlier he argued for creating a payments instrument modeled on Libra (since December 2020 — Diem), capable of replacing the US dollar as a reserve currency.
«Over the past decade, the nature of global trade has changed. Stripe has been and remains at the forefront of the new digital economy. I would be pleased to participate in building the global infrastructure that will allow the Internet to become a driver of economic growth», the former official commented on his appointment.
Stripe is counting on Carney’s experience in financial services and central-bank engagement. The payments company operates in several jurisdictions and works with dozens of banks.
As a reminder, in early 2018 Stripe stopped supporting Bitcoin due to price volatility and significant time costs.
Later, Stripe president John Collison did not rule out a return of support for the leading cryptocurrency in the future.
In late 2019 Stripe exited the Diem project (formerly Libra) from Facebook.
