Fraudsters posing as Elon Musk promoted a Twitter cryptocurrency scam under a Trump post

Fraudsters again used Elon Musk’s name to promote a cryptocurrency scam. From a verified Twitter account, allegedly belonging to the head of Tesla and SpaceX, they announced a ‘reward distribution’ under Donald Trump’s tweet.

Under the tweet by the sitting U.S. president about the ongoing elections, the scammers said that ‘everything is settled’, and urged users to ‘celebrate’.

When visiting the site, users saw a counterfeit page announcing an allegedly special giveaway for ‘all cryptocurrency fans’ from Tesla.

To receive the promised reward, the scammers asked to send small amounts of Bitcoin and Ethereum to their wallets.

The hijacked verified account, which the hackers subsequently renamed, belonged to Emma Isaacs, head of Business Chicks.

As of writing, the account had been registered again under her name.

Earlier, the attackers had already used Musk’s name to promote a ‘giveaway of 10,000 BTC’.

In 2018, the head of Tesla proposed to Dogecoin creator Jackson Palmer to devise a way to combat cryptocurrency fraud on Twitter, and in early 2020 said that the level of crypto-scam on the social network is reaching new heights.

In July 2020, hackers hacked Elon Musk’s own Twitter account and many other famous people and posted messages about a fake giveaway of 5,000 BTC.
