Future of Life Institute launches Vitalik Buterin-named fellowship programmes.
The not-for-profit research institute Future of Life Institute has created two fellowship programmes named after Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
According to the statement, the fellowship in existential AI safety is intended for students who will continue to work on the topic in their PhD studies.
Annual funding over five years for the PhD programme will be $40,000, with an additional fund of $10,000 intended to cover research, travel and equipment expenses.
The second fellowship is for researchers at the stage after the PhD. It will amount to $80,000 per year, with the possibility of additional funding of up to $10,000. The programme lasts three years.
“The aim of the fellowship is to fund talented researchers with a PhD to work on existential AI safety,” as stated in the statement.
The Future of Life Institute is a not-for-profit research institute and volunteer organisation that works to mitigate global catastrophic and existential risks facing humanity, especially those related to AI.
TIME magazine named Buterin among the 100 most influential people of 2021.
Back in May 2021, the 27-year-old Ethereum joined the ranks of billionaires. This happened after the cryptocurrency surpassed the $3,000 mark.
