Gaming blockchain startup GOALS raises $15 million in seed funding

The Swedish startup GOALS, which is developing a blockchain football game, closed a seed financing round worth $15 million. The Block reported this.

Investors include venture funds Northzone, Cherry and Moonfire Ventures, as well as footballer Gerard Piqué. The raised funds are planned to be used to hire 30 developers to debut the game by the end of 2022.

GOALS is an online game in which players will earn in-game items through their actions, such as football clubs, characters and model skins.

The game’s artifacts in GOALS are represented as non-fungible tokens. Players manage teams of 15 football players, each stored at their address as an NFT.

“In FIFA you can only have skins for a short period of time. You can’t control them, you can’t sell them, there’s no transparency. Blockchain is a wonderful solution to this problem,” says GOALS founder Andreas Torstensson.

The game developers intend to profit from commissions on trades on their NFT marketplace, as well as from the sale of additional content.

In recent months the company has been studying blockchains to choose the network on which it will build the game. Among the favourites are Polygon, StarkWare and Solana. GOALS noted that each user will hold a large number of tokens, which will require high network throughput.

Earlier in the Cross The Ages raised $12 million in a seed round of funding.
