Gemini Resumes Operations After Prolonged Maintenance
On December 16, the Gemini cryptocurrency exchange run by the Winklevoss twins suspended operations for planned maintenance. The maintenance window was pushed back several times.
The platform shut down services for users from 6:00 (MSK). Initially, the resumption of services was planned for 8:00.
“Gemini will conduct planned maintenance on Thursday, December 15, from about 22:00 to Friday, December 16, 00:00 ET,” the statement said.
At the time of writing, the team had pushed the deadlines six times. The last stated finish time was 12:30.
The exchange pushed the deadlines by another hour.

The Gemini team resumed operations, but warned that some systems were experiencing outages. The maintenance work lasted about 7.5 hours.
On Thursday, December 15, Gemini announced a data breach following a series of phishing attacks. The company said that customer funds are safe.
On November 16, the exchange halted withdrawals and the issuing of new loans under the Gemini Earn lending program.
The cause was financial difficulties at one of its key partners—the Genesis Global unit of the Digital Currency Group run by Barry Silbert.
According to media reports, Genesis owed Gemini clients $900 million.
Back in the crypto winter, the Winklevoss twins’ company had already carried out two waves of layoffs.
