Google Unveils New AI Model for Programmers

At the Cloud Next conference, Google announced Gemini Code Assist, an AI tool designed to aid in code writing.

It will be available through plugins for popular editors such as VS Code and JetBrains.

Previously, the corporation offered a similar service called Duet AI. It became available at the end of 2023, but shortly thereafter, Google announced its transition to Gemini. Code Assist represents both a rebranding of the old tool and a significant update.

The AI model offers a range of unique features:

  • A context window of a million tokens allows for more information extraction from a query, leading to more accurate code suggestions;
  • Customization based on the company’s internal database ensures more precise and relevant bot responses;
  • Support for GitLab, GitHub, BitBucket, and other similar services;
  • Partnerships with Stack Overflow, Datadog, Datastax, Elastic, HashiCorp, and others provide access to extensive knowledge bases.

“The update allows clients to make large-scale code changes with AI that were previously impossible,” explained Brad Calder, Vice President and General Manager of Google Cloud.

In addition to Code Assist, Google announced the launch of CodeGemma, a new open model tailored for code creation and assistance. The neural network is available through Vertex AI.

The company also introduced Gemini Cloud Assist, a tool that ensures collaborative involvement in the full cycle of application development and operation.

It helps identify error causes and optimizes cloud usage to reduce costs or improve performance.

In February 2024, Google introduced the open AI model Gemma.
