Google unveils Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro with Tensor processor for machine learning

Google officially unveiled the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro smartphones, equipped with the company’s Tensor mobile processor.

Tensor is built on a 5‑nm process. The processor features a three-cluster design consisting of two high‑performance Cortex-X1 cores, two mid‑range Cortex-A76 cores, and four power‑efficient Cortex-A55 cores.

A dedicated Tensor processing unit handles machine-learning tasks, while the graphics are handled by a 20‑core Mali‑G78 GPU.

The company demonstrated a range of new features that run on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro thanks to artificial intelligence. The Tensor processor, in real time, enhances photo and video quality by recognizing objects and scenes and adjusting the camera to the shooting conditions.

The Magic Eraser feature, powered by machine learning, lets users remove unwanted objects from photos. The company emphasised that image processing occurs on-device, without an internet connection.

The processor also enables faster offline speech recognition. Google described this feature as “the most accurate on its smartphones.”

Pixel 6 features a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution, 8 GB of RAM and 128/256 GB of storage, a 50 MP wide-angle camera and a 12 MP ultra-wide camera, as well as an 8 MP front sensor. The battery capacity is 4614 mAh.

The Pro model features a curved 6.7-inch display with QHD+ resolution, 12 GB of RAM, up to 512 GB of built-in storage, an additional 48 MP telephoto camera, an 11.1 MP front sensor and a 5003 mAh battery.

Both smartphones run Android 12, have an in-display fingerprint sensor, support fast charging, 5G networks and Wi‑Fi 6E.

The devices cost from $599 and $899 respectively. Sales begin on October 28, 2021.

In August, Google showed its own Tensor system-on-a-chip with tensor cores.

In May, at the developers’ conference I/O, the company introduced the Tensor Processor TPUv4 for cloud computing.

In June, researchers from Google Research reported that they used reinforcement learning to accelerate chip design from months to six hours.
