Google unveils Tensor G2 processor with a dedicated AI chip
Google, alongside the launch of its new Pixel 7 smartphone lineup, introduced the second generation Tensor G2 processor with a dedicated TPU chip.
The SoC includes eight compute cores.
- Two Cortex-X1 Prime cores at 2.85 GHz;
- Two Cortex-A79 Performance cores at 2.35 GHz;
- Four Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8 GHz.
The graphics processing unit is the Mali G710 MP07.
According to company representatives, the new tensor TPU block is 60% faster and 20% more efficient than its predecessor. With it, developers could implement a range of new features for the camera and natural-language processing.
The Cinematic Blur feature on Pixel 7 phones applies portrait mode while recording video, blurring the background. Photo Unblur can remove blur from images, including those captured with other devices. Night Sight, the night photography mode, works twice as fast.

The company has also used AI to process photos taken with Super Zoom.
In addition, the company applied machine-learning algorithms to improve audio quality in video clips.
The smartphones learned to transcribe voice messages and dictation recordings. Recorder automatically recognizes speakers and splits the text into the corresponding sections.
Direct My Call, built on the AI assistant Duplex, analyzes phone calls faster and offers relevant response options.

The Clear My Call feature uses machine learning to remove noise during phone conversations.
Google also reinstated face unlock using the front camera. There are no additional sensors on the front panel of the smartphone.
Tensor G2 became the foundation for the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. They went on sale in the second half of October 2022 at prices starting from $599 and $899 respectively.
The processor will also be included in the company’s first tablet, slated for release in 2023.
As reported in May at Google’s I/O developer conference, Google announced Tensor G2.
In August 2021, the company introduced the first generation of the processor with a dedicated TPU chip.
