Greenpeace pauses Bitcoin donations over high energy consumption

A representative of the international environmental organisation Greenpeace told the Financial Times in a comment about the suspension of accepting Bitcoin donations due to the high energy consumption of cryptocurrency mining.

“The amount of energy required to run Bitcoin is becoming increasingly evident over time, so this policy no longer seems reasonable,” said a Greenpeace spokesperson.

The organisation начала принимать биткоин in 2014. At the time Greenpeace noted the environmental advantages of digital gold in terms of lower transaction costs for processing transactions compared with banks.

On May 13, Tesla announced the suspension of sales of electric vehicles for Bitcoin due to concerns about the environmental impact of cryptocurrency mining. In this context, Bitcoin’s price tumbled to $45,700.

Earlier on May 21, Elon Musk said that the electricity consumption of Bitcoin mining exceeds the figures of some countries.

According to a recent study, mining centres located in China will consume more than 296.59 TWh of electricity by 2024 and will surpass the Philippines in greenhouse gas emissions.
