Hackers attacked laptop maker Compal and demanded 1,100 BTC in ransom

Taiwanese laptop manufacturer Compal Electronics was hit by the DoppelPaymer ransomware. For decrypting the files hackers demanded 1,100 BTC (nearly $17 million at the time of writing), according to Bleeping Computer.

Compal was hit over the weekend. Initially, the company said there were problems with its office information systems and suspected that the cause was a hacker attack.

As Bleeping Computer later found out, Compal fell victim to the DoppelPaymer malware, known for attacks on corporate networks by gaining administrator privileges and using them to spread within Windows networks.

Earlier DoppelPaymer attacked the Mexican oil company Pemex and demanded a ransom of 100 BTC to decrypt the files of municipal websites and services in the city of Torreón.

According to Group-IB specialists, DoppelPaymer ranked among the three most aggressive and greedy ransomware families of 2019.
