Hackers breach numerous Ukrainian government websites

In the early hours of January 14, hackers carried out a large-scale attack on the websites of Ukrainian ministries and agencies. The pages of the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and others were affected.

The attack was confirmed by the Ministry of Education and Science.

Hackers posted a message on the sites stating that all residents’ data have been uploaded to a shared network, and the information on the computers is destroyed and not recoverable.

At the time of writing, most Ukrainian ministry websites were down, and the Diia service site was offline.

Update:

Most sites have been brought back online. In total, hackers attacked more than 70 government resources, 10 of which were subjected to unauthorized interference. The content of the sites was not changed, and there were no data leaks.

In the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, stated that, with high probability, the hackers conducted a supply chain attack – a supply-chain attack.

“The attackers disrupted the infrastructure of a commercial company that had administrative rights to the resources affected by the attack,” the ministry added.

Over the weekend, investigators will continue the investigation to identify the perpetrators and those responsible for the cyberattack.

Earlier, Ukraine identified suspects in organizing ransomware attacks, the damage from whose activities exceeded $1 million.
