Hackers infiltrated almost 2,000 Robinhood accounts

Hackers managed to gain access to about two thousand Robinhood accounts on the crypto-friendly platform. Bloomberg reports, citing anonymous sources.

A week earlier the platform operator said that starting in September, hackers had breached the passwords of a limited number of clients’ personal email accounts. As a result, users’ funds were at risk.

The figure of 2,000 accounts may indeed seem «limited» in comparison with the company’s client base, which has reached 13 million users.

The platform recommended using two-factor authentication. However, according to some sources, this did not shield customers from unauthorized withdrawals. Robinhood did not disclose the extent of the losses.

Journalists note that lapses by individual Robinhood customers, as well as systemic issues on the platform, are possible explanations.

Earlier in September, ForkLog reported that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) would examine Robinhood’s operations.

Also in September, after the successful closing of the Series G funding round, Robinhood’s valuation reached $11.7 billion.
