
Hackers stole more than $1 billion in cryptocurrencies from blockchain projects in Q3 2021
In the third quarter of 2021, hackers targeting the blockchain industry stole more than $1.1 billion in cryptocurrencies. данные Atlas VPN show.
The Ethereum ecosystem was hit the hardest. Over the analysis period it lost more than $800 million across 20 attacks.
The analysis also included a major breach of the Poly Network protocol, even though the attacker subsequently returned the stolen funds.
Hackers also carried out five attacks on cryptocurrency exchanges, resulting in losses of $114 million. One of the largest incidents was the Liquid exchange hot-wallet breach.
The Binance Smart Chain (BSC) ecosystem was hit by seven hacks and lost $23 million in Q3 2021.
During attacks on smaller ecosystems and various scams, $193 million was stolen.
In the first three quarters of 2021 there were more hacks than in the last three years. The number of attacks continues to rise into the fourth quarter of 2021, analysts concluded. The main targets remain the Ethereum ecosystem and cryptocurrency exchanges.
According to Atlas VPN’s report, last year, as a result of 122 attacks on blockchain industry participants, hackers stole nearly $3.8 billion in cryptocurrencies.
