Hackers stole more than $800,000 from Belarusian banks. They converted the funds into cryptocurrency
The Belarusian Interior Ministry has identified ten participants of disparate international cybercrime groups who stole $837,000 from eight Belarusian banks. BELTA reported, citing Vladimir Zaitsev, head of the ministry’s high-tech crime investigations unit.
Using malware, the perpetrators gained access to payment terminals of various US-based services.
Through these terminals, the suspects sent chargeback requests to Belarusian banks. They cashed out the funds, used them to buy cryptocurrencies, and moved them to front accounts, the Investigative Committee said.
The cash withdrawals were made through ATMs located in Belarus, Russia, Lithuania, Latvia and several other states. Bank cards used for transferring funds were issued in the names of nominal holders.
The final loss figure is yet to be established, and law enforcement authorities continue the investigation.
Earlier in Belarus, a resident was charged with involvement in a hacker group that distributed the GandCrab ransomware and demanded a ransom in the cryptocurrency DASH.
