Hackers transfer $20,000 in Bitcoin to charity

The Darkside Hackers group transferred $10,000 to two charitable organisations in cryptocurrency. The information comes from BBC.

According to the hackers, they obtained the money as a result of attacks on large companies by ransomware.

“We believe it would be fair to donate part of these companies’ money to charity. It doesn’t matter how badly you regard our work. We’re pleased to know that we’ve helped change someone’s life,” they write.

One of the transfers went to the non-profit organization Children International. Its representatives refused to accept money from criminals.

The other donation was made to The Water Project, which has not commented on the hackers’ actions yet.

Experts note that this is the first time ransomware operators have donated part of their proceeds to charity.

To send bitcoins, hackers used The Giving Block, a platform that specialises in donations. Earlier the project posted on Twitter about these transactions, but the tweet has since been deleted.

In The Giving Block, the platform stressed that it did not know the funds’ provenance. It intends to return the money to the rightful owner if it is discovered that the funds were stolen.

Earlier, Group-IB specialists said that Bitcoin ransomware programs had fallen out of favour with hackers. In the first half of 2020 they accounted for only 1% of total attacks.
