HBO Documentary to Unveil Bitcoin Creator’s Identity
On October 9, HBO will release a new documentary film aiming to unveil the identity of Bitcoin’s creator, who has remained anonymous under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto.
The film, titled Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, is directed by Cullen Hoback, whose previous work, Q: Into the Storm, exposed the widespread QAnon conspiracy theory in the United States.
In an interview with Fast Company, Hoback revealed that he learned about Bitcoin before 2017, when he truly began to understand the workings of cryptocurrency.
The film took three years to produce, with Blockstream CEO Adam Back serving as a “key point” in the investigation of the digital gold’s greatest mystery.
“In the film, we present some damn convincing arguments, and I think the person we settle on will surprise and spark a lot of debate. I’m sure people will argue about it regardless of how compelling our arguments are, and that’s okay. That’s the nature of this space. We had far more evidence than we could include in the film,” the director stated.
He noted that Bitcoin has gone mainstream, and Satoshi holds a “giant share” of the cryptocurrency. Estimates suggest this amounts to 1.1 million BTC, valued at approximately $67 billion.
Hoback believes the Bitcoin creator could publicly destroy these assets for the “safety and longevity of Bitcoin.” Satoshi has not done so, but the possibility remains, he added.
“Therefore, it’s very important to try to understand who is behind this,” the director emphasized.
Galaxy Digital’s head of research, Alex Thorn, wrote that the film’s authors claim the true identity of Satoshi is Len Sassaman. This theory was presented in 2021 by Evan Luthra, founder of the gaming project Worlds and a Bitcoin advocate, he recalled.
hearing that the forthcoming HBO (wed oct 9) documentary identifies len sassaman as satoshi — there was a good write-up of this theory by @evan_worlds in 2021
if that’s who the doc identifies, should be neutral to positive for BTCUSD given that len died in 2013 (RIP)…

Sassaman was a well-known cypherpunk who took his own life in July 2011.
“If that’s who the documentary identifies, it should be neutral to positive for Bitcoin’s price, considering Len passed away,” Thorn predicted.
Politico suggested that revealing Satoshi’s identity could shock financial markets and influence the U.S. presidential election. Republican candidate Donald Trump enjoys support from cryptocurrency enthusiasts, journalists noted.
A page titled “Who will HBO identify as Satoshi Nakamoto?” has appeared on the decentralized prediction platform Polymarket. Nearly half of the users are betting on Sassaman. Some even believe that Craig Wright is the creator of Bitcoin. Elon Musk is also among the named individuals.

In March, a UK court ruled that Craig Wright is not the creator of digital gold.
According to the decision, the Australian entrepreneur is now required to publish a corresponding notice on all his web resources.
