Hillary Clinton warns of cryptocurrency manipulation by Russia and China

The Biden administration must tighten cryptocurrency regulation amid manipulations by certain states and non-state actors that destabilise the dollar, said Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state and US presidential candidate, in an MSNBC interview.

“We monitor the actions not only of Russia or China, but also of non-state actors. The latter, either alone or in cooperation with authorities, undermine the dollar’s status as a reserve currency. There are many big questions that will need answering,” she said.

She pointed to a combination of social media, mood-management algorithms and large sums of money controlling certain cryptocurrencies.

The interview echoes the leitmotif of Clinton’s previous remarks, during which she called cryptocurrencies a threat to the dollar and the stability of individual countries.

The Fed, the FDIC and the OCC, as part of the U.S. Treasury, will prepare guidance on cryptocurrencies in 2022.

Earlier in the United States, they formed a “cryptocurrency enforcement task force” as a structural unit of the Department of Justice.
