The value of 143 tokens from the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection, for which the OpenSea marketplace had marked suspicious activity, amounts to $13.58 million. This assessment was provided by Immunefi’s bug-bounty platform specialists.
134 of the 143 tokens, valued at $12.64 million, retain a similar status.
The most expensive BAYC in this sample was last sold for 194 ETH ($267,914).
Such NFTs cannot be bought, sold or transferred using the OpenSearch function.
OpenSea does not custody tokens on the platform. Hackers may use other services to transfer or sell stolen NFTs or interact directly with interested users.
After ownership transfer, a token can lose such a label. Immunefi cited Bored Ape #9988 as an example. The NFT changed hands following an exchange involving an additional 6.13 ETH for Bored Ape #753 in NFTX’s liquidity pool.
Experts noted that the best protection for tokens against criminals is cold storage of assets. Users fall prey to hackers due to phishing, malicious links and software, and malware.
In the event of an NFT marketplace attack, experts recommended revoking any access to the platform and transferring the tokens to a hardware wallet.
As reported by Immunefi, crypto-project losses from hacks in the second quarter totaled $670.7 million.
For January–March 2022, the figure stood at $1.22 billion.
