In Ukraine, proposals to move COVID-19 certificates onto the blockchain

The public union “Virtual Assets of Ukraine” and the cross-faction association of deputies Blockchain4Ukraine proposed to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, to implement blockchain in the procedure for issuing and verifying COVID-19 immunity certificates. A copy of the appeal is in ForkLog’s editorial office.

The authors of the initiative refer to the experience of South Korea, Singapore, and the state of New York, which have applied blockchain technology to minimise the risk of document forgery.

“The relevance of the proposal is explained by the recent state agreement on the interoperability of Ukrainian and European digital COVID certificates,” the letter states.

If approved, the organisations will present to the head of government the corresponding concept for consideration.

The authors of the appeal also proposed creating a permanent working group “Ukraine Blockchain Strategy” to implement the initiative.

As noted, the public union “Virtual Assets of Ukraine” was established in Kyiv at the end of November 2020. It included the public organisation Blockchain4Ukraine, law firms Arzinger and Juscutum, and the Binance exchange.

In January 2021, the organisation proposed to implement the tokenisation of assets at the state level.

In March, members of the union sent to the Prime Minister of Ukraine a roadmap for blockchain integration with the European Union.
