Interpol halts activities of cybercriminals who attacked 500,000 companies worldwide
As a result of the operation dubbed \”Falcon\”, Interpol disrupted the activities of Nigerian cybercriminals who were stealing user data. ForkLog was told this by representatives of the cybersecurity firm Group-IB, which also participated in the operation.
The group, named TMT, has since at least 2017 carried out mass breaches of corporate email and stolen user data from browsers, email, and FTP servers, including for sale.
The attackers conducted phishing campaigns based on social engineering.
As a result of their activities, no fewer than 500,000 government and private companies in more than 150 countries were compromised, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Russia.
During the \”Falcon\” operation, law enforcement arrested three cybercriminals. Upon arrest, Nigerian police found on their devices data relating to about 50 000 victims.
The investigation continues.
In October, as part of an international operation, arrested 20 suspects in money laundering using cryptocurrency.
