Iran aims to become a leader in artificial intelligence

By 2023, Iran plans to enter the top ten countries in artificial intelligence, according to a new national AI strategy. Tehran Times reports.

According to Shahram Moein, head of the Innovation and Development Center for AI at the Institute for Information and Communications Technology, work on the national roadmap began a year ago and officially concluded by the end of November 2021.

“In developing the strategy, the strategic documents of 23 countries in AI were evaluated so that areas such as environment, healthcare, transportation, online education, energy, robotics, industry, agriculture, and the development of security were among the priority directions for AI development,” he said.

Moein added that among the strategy’s goals are meeting the country’s needs in research at 80%, increasing the share of AI in industry to 45%, in GDP to 12%, and allocating $8 billion for the development of the sector.

The document contains 47 micro-policies, 39 general actions, and 155 projects and activities. According to Moein, 14 macro-policies are aimed at supporting AI products, creating a foundation for the development of the technology, strengthening companies operating in this field, and using artificial intelligence to tackle highly complex tasks.

In September 2021, the United Kingdom approved its AI development strategy to compete with the United States and China.

In the same month, the U.S. government formed an AI committee to advise President Joe Biden and other federal agencies.

In March, Chinese authorities adopted a five-year plan to achieve technological dominance, including in the field of artificial intelligence.
