Iran reimposes restrictions on cryptocurrency mining
The state-owned energy holding Tavanir has asked authorised miners to halt operations. This was reported by Financial Tribune.
The authorities are trying to avoid electricity shortages amid rising winter consumption. In Tavanir’s view, the steps taken by the authorities should prevent possible outages during periods of high demand.
“The Ministry of Energy has since last month taken measures to reduce the use of liquid fuel at power plants, including by cutting power to licensed crypto farms,” said the holding’s representative Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi in a comment to IRIB, the state broadcaster.
According to him, power plants have saved fuel for the coming months.
This is not the first time Iran has imposed restrictions on miners. In late May, President Hassan Rouhani announced a temporary ban on cryptocurrency mining due to electricity shortages. Licensed enterprises were allowed to resume operations in the autumn.
Earlier the Iranian Ministry of Industry issued 30 licenses to companies involved in mining.
Earlier in November, media reported the confiscation of 221,390 devices for cryptocurrency mining during the crackdown on illegal miners.
